About Us
The Monterey Bay Area Cooperative Library System (MOBAC) is a multi-type library consortium of 16 full members (public, academic and special) and several networking members in Monterey, San Benito and Santa Cruz counties on the California Central Coast.
MOBAC began in 1969 as a public library cooperative and by 1985 had grown to include academic and special libraries as equal members in the organization. It is now one of 15 cooperative library systems in California and is funded in part by the State through the California Library Services Act and by fees collected from member libraries. In 2009, MOBAC joined the Pacific Library Partnership, a consolidation of several Northern California library systems.
The MOBAC libraries work together to share resources to improve library services to the residents of all the members’ jurisdictions. Library patrons pay no direct fees for use of MOBAC services.
MOBAC is governed by an Administrative Council composed of the director or liaison of each member. The Council meets regularly to set policy and direction for the system.

MOBAC is a multi-type organization that develops and delivers information services to member libraries and other clients using the most effective methods; promotes sharing its members’ diverse resources; and plays a leadership role in developing innovative programs and in advocating for library services.
Our Values
All MOBAC members are unified in one core value: the library in each community – whether public, academic, or special – is essential to the quality and enjoyment of life in that community, and for creating an informed population, with free and equal access to information, and resources that are meaningful to the people they serve.
